What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for Laser Assisted Insitu Keratomileusis, which was first performed in 1989. LASIK is a form of refractive surgery, is an option for vision correction fixing the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. Simply put, LASIK reshapes the cornea with a laser to match the curvature that a contact lens would mimic. LASIK can be performed on nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatism patients. Today, there are other surgical procedures available for patients that are not candidates for LASIK. The two most common reasons for not being a candidate for LASIK are the corneas are too thin for surgery or a prescription is to high. Contact us and we can help determine what procedure is right for you. Among these is a technique called ICL (Implantable Contact Lens). This procedure involves implanting a permanent contact lens behind the iris, but in front of the natural lens in the eye. This contact does not ever need replaced and does not cause comfort issues like a contact on the front of the eye. With this new option, many of those who were too nearsighted or farsighted for LASIK are now candidates for refractive surgery and freedom from glasses and contact lenses. In 2015 a new procedure was approved that is changing our industry, the KAMRA implant was released to allow near focus to be restored. Previously we did not have any procedure that would provide this option. Now we can put an implant in one eye that can restore near vision.
